This is the limited edition McDonald’s Durian McFlurry.
Made using real D24 durian purée, the McFlurry is back in Hong Kong and Macau after selling out within 2 days when it first was released earlier in the month. For those of you not in the know, durian is sometimes better known as the world’s smelliest fruit. Some will either love it or absolutely hate it. But how did the HKD$25 (about £2.50) D24 Durian McFlurry rate?
There’s been a lot of debate about whether the durian purée used is made using real durian and it’s hard not to understand the cynicism – it’s McDonald’s and a highly hyped product; it did sell out after 2 days when it was first realised after all. But it does contain small pieces of durian, swirled into the soft vanilla ice cream, which adds a little texture.
My relationship with durian is that I somewhat enjoy fresh durian but not artificial durian flavoured products and I really enjoyed the McFlurry (even if I really didn’t enjoy the cost of it). Some have said it’s too sweet but I found the level of sweetness just right with the creamy and bittersweet durian purée taking away from the sweet ice cream. It doesn’t smell too strongly of durian either except when you bring it up to your nose, a blessing for some!
I was left tasting the durian afterwards for quite some time however, again whether that’s a good or bad thing, that’s up to each individual. You can in fact get a “deluxe” version for HKD$40 (about £4.00) which has 2 scoops of the purée or a “premium” version for HKD$55 (about £5.50) which has 3 scoops.
But the main question is whether I would have this again… and given the price, probably not. While it was really enjoyable to eat and the durian puree was creamy and bittersweet, I didn’t feel that it was all that worth it. It’s something to try once because it’s limited edition and not to have all the time.
